One annual event not to be missed for anyone with an inquisitive mind or an interest in science is our Sci-fest@Creagh. This year it will be Creagh College’s 4th Annual Sci-fest competition and will be held during Science week in November. Last year over 60 2nd year students with over 22 projects reached the final of the school’s competition.
The standard is always very high and has ranged from technological inventions to social experiments. The sci-fest will be included on their Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement as part of the new Junior Cycle, as the valuable learning experience of taking part is recognised.
Our Judges, Mr George Porter, CEO of Sci-fest Ireland, and Mr Mel Ó Cinnéide, Science Lecturer UCD, both enjoy attending Creagh College every year and are always hugely impressed with the standards. The students proudly showcase their hard work and findings to 3 different judges, and gain invaluable communication skills while doing so.
Creagh College have also had notable success in the Regional Finals in IT Tallaght. Our past two winners of our Sci-fest@school competitions went on to scoop prizes there. Brandon and Sam won 2 prizes last year – 1st prize in the Intermediate Biology category and The Boston Scientific Medical Devices Award for their project ‘Dia-beating Hypos’. Brandon and Sam will again represent Creagh College when they go on to the National Final in November. Isobel Cummins won 1st prize for the best Physical Science Project in 2016.
If you have an idea you’d like to turn into a project – please chat to your science teacher who’ll guide you on how best to proceed. You’re guaranteed to have fun, while experiencing first hand how scientists work.
